Some of you may have seen the Electric Fountain squirting water in the air while we were testing the new pump station during the summer and fall of 2005 and again during the summer of 2006. Numerous paddle-boaters were observed madly dashing out of the spray from the fountain... and others were not! Laughter was often heard on shore as one person was steering into the spray as the other one tried to escape it.
Although nozzles for ten of the original twelve water features still existed, due to broken and missing pipes, broken valves and leaks, only two of the water displays of the fountain could be operated in 2005. With light or no wind, the 90-foot tall (based on historic documents) center geyser was able to reach about 65 feet in the air. The six vertical columns of water surrounding the center geyser were adjusted to be about 30 feet high.
In the spring of 2006, temporary repairs were made to the fountain plumbing so that we could see and photograph all ten of the remaining fountain water displays in action. This information was used to design the new fountain works that will be under construction during 2007 and 2008.
The control valves were set manually since the control system to operate them from the north tower of the Pavilion has not functioned in many years.
There is no working power at the fountain vault, so there was no night-time illumination of the fountain.
